Mechanical Design Engineer (Part-Time)

Job Description
In this role will work closely with our experienced engineers to design, develop, and implement electromechanical solutions that address real-world challenges.
You will perform mechanical design of parts, assemblies, and tooling for high precision positioning/motion stages. This is a 20-25 hour/week role, with at least 16 hour/week on-site at our facility located at 333 Jackson Plaza, Ann Arbor, MI.
Responsibilities
- Design mechanical parts, assemblies, and tooling for high-precision positioning and motion stages.
- Conduct design reviews; manage prototype procurement and vendor relationships.
- Testing, system integration, and stage servo tuning.
- Test and qualify stages to meet performance and reliability requirements.
- Create assembly procedures, documentation, and user guides to support transfer to manufacturing.
- Perform analyses and simulations, including structural and vibration analysis and motor current/voltage/power calculations.
- Collaborate with controls and systems engineering teams.
Must haves
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.
- Familiarity with analysis tools and languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C++.
- Experience using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Magics) or other mechanical design software.
- Familiarity with software development methodologies and tools (e.g., Agile, Git).
- Authorization to work in the United States as required by the role.
- Proactive mindset and ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced startup environment.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience implementing various types of rotary bearings/linear guides
- Design experience of X,Y sub-micron positioning stages
- Experience in vibration optimization and design for high stiffness to weight ratio
- Vibration and modal testing using accelerometers, impact hammer, etc.
- Experience with implementation of the use of high-resolution feedback devices such as optical encoders
- Motion control and servo tuning
- Proactive mindset and ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced startup environment.

R&D Engineer
In this role, you will execute scientific or engineering research, generating new knowledge and innovative technologies in additive and robotic manufacturing systems. This will include architecting, developing, validating, and implementing novel control algorithms for manufacturing automation. This is a hybrid position with onsite work performed on equipment at our lab. Some travel to client sites and industry conferences will be required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics or robotics; PhD preferred
- Ability to
- read and understand scientific literature in controls and mechatronics,
- invent and problem-solve,
- apply algorithm research to real systems,
- work in lab environments and participate in hands-on activity
- Experience with
- MATLAB/Simulink system modeling and controller design,
- developing new ways of designing or controlling machines,
- implementing novel control algorithms based on academic research on physical hardware, e.g., on robots or other machines
- Publication of first-author articles on controls or mechatronics in top-tier, peer reviewed journals or conferences
